Handwriting Homework

I sent home lots of handwriting pages yesterday! These are for extra practice over vacation so your student is remember those handwriting rules. Remind them to start at the top, to keep their letters between the two lines (unless it's a hang down letter or a tall letter) and to go slow and do their best! These handwriting pages will earn them a stamp on their homework chart - when this chart is full they get to pick from the prize box!

How far away is Afghanistan?

To show students the distance between Mechanic Falls and Afghanistan, we put two tacks in our world map. The green one is roughly where we are and the orange one shows roughly where our soldier friend is! Students have been working very hard on their letters and we are putting our care package in the mail on Monday! :)

HALF DAY WEDNESDAY!

DON'T FORGET!!!! This Wednesday (4/4/12) is a half day for students! Dismissal will be at 12! :)

Writing to a US Soldier!

We have very exciting news! We are going to be writing letters to an active US Soldier. Miss Stearns' best friend is named Allison. Allison has friends who are in the National Guard. One of Allison's friends just deployed to Afghanistan for a year and she asked if we would like to send a letter to this soldier. When I asked the class they all agreed they would love to! :)

So today we began brainstorming ideas of things to say in our letter. Over the next couple days we will be working hard on our letters and pictures we will be sending!

Yesterday we started talking about coins. We are leaning about pennies and nickels. To help us remember some facts about pennies we learned this new poem!

Penny penny
Easily spent
Copper brown
And worth one cent!

Since we have learned all the letters of the alphabet (Yayyy!) we are moving onto letter blends - two letters that make a different sound when they are together in a word. This week we have been learning the sound that /sh/ makes. Today we practiced the tongue twister 'She Sells Seashells' and highlighted all the /sh/ we could find!

She sells seashells by the seashore.
The shells she sells are surely seashells.
So if she sells shells on the seashore.
I'm sure she sells seashore sells.

We decided that it was too nice to stay inside this week, so we went out on the playground to work on our sight words by playing a version of 'Red Rover, Red Rover' and baseball! :) Make sure you ask your child about these games...they are really simple to play at home and work on word recognition!

Thanks to all the families who were able to make it to conferences tonight...it was great to see everyone! :)
